Greetings!
May is a busy month in Garrett County. At Bill's, we're getting all of the new and used boats sold during our April Boat Show cleaned up and ready to drop in the water, along with getting the rental fleet tuned-up for the summer. At the new Exhibition Hall at the Fairgrounds they're getting ready for the Annual Home and Garden Show. From Wine tasting at the Savage River Lodge, to Dancing with the Local Stars at Wisp Resort, to the All American Whitewater Festival at ASCI over Memeorial Day weekend, there's always plenty to do in and around Deep Creek Lake. Garrett County is truly a four-season destination resort, with something to do even when the weather doesn't cooperate.
At Bill's, we still have plenty of new boats and pontoons in stock, along with a good selection of trade-ins, so stop by and check out what 2012 has to offer in on-water fun. Bill's Marine Service is your one-stop shopping experience. See you then! |

And Five Dollars In Quarters
A serialized story of two boys buying their first boat, featuring real people
in a fictional setting,
by Bob Newman, Bill's Marine Service employee
Chapter Two
It was cold in the garage, the exhaust from the heat gun the only thing keeping Bob's hands from freezing solid. Eric stood across from him, sanding the area they'd stripped last weekend, varnish and stain dust covering their heavy coats and hats.
They'd unloaded the boat onto sawhorses in Eric's grandmother's garage just across the cove from Bob's place, and spent the fall stripping the hardware from the boat and pulling out every screw and reseating it. They'd found rot in one small section of plywood on the bottom of the starboard sponson, something that looked to be the result of a collision years ago and never fixed. It had taken six weeks to find the right kind of plywood and have it shipped in, then a whole weekend to remove the old piece, cut and trim the new one to size, then bed and screw it into place. After that it was stripping and sanding every weekend and, by the end of today, the first weekend after New Years, they should be done with the dirty work.
Eric and Bob had been friends since second grade, meeting on the playground after lunch, when Bob had tried to score from second during a kickball game. Eric had scooped up the throw from the outfield and blocked the plate perfectly, only to have Bob run through him at full speed, the ball jarring loose and ending up jammed under a truck in the street. After a quick scrum while each aired their opinion of the play, they were banished to the principal's office not for the fight, but for their use of profanity deemed unsuitable for the second grade playground.
They'd been best friends ever since.
Eric spent most of his summers at Bob's house on Penn Point, skiing behind their old Nautique and rowing around in an old boat that had come with the cottage. When the boys turned twelve Bob's parents bought an old outboard for twenty-five dollars and hung it on the back of the steel boat, the only condition being that they couldn't leave the cove. And from that point on they'd dreamed of owning their own boat, and going wherever they wanted on the lake.
Bob pushed the plastic scraper across the wood, peeling the last of the old varnish from the plywood deck, then shut the heat gun down and dropped it to the floor.
"That's it, finally." He looked across the boat at Eric. "Hand me a piece of that 80 grit, would ya?"
Eric flipped him a piece of sandpaper and the two boys sanded in silence, both slowly turning brown as the dust coated them from head to toe. By the end of the day, when Eric's parents called them in to dinner, the last of the old stain and varnish was gone, and the quarter-inch plywood gleamed dully under the 8' fluorescents they'd propped on either side of the boat.
And that would be it until the weather warmed, and they could start staining and varnishing. But that would have to wait until spring. Until then they would have to be content with dreams of high-speed runs around the cove, kneeling hunched over the steering wheel, the throttle held wide open.
